Type and Period (2)
Full Description
{1} First recorded in 1086 Domesday as two manors and a population of 27.
{2} At least 12 cottars were on the main manor in 1359.
{3} Settlement remains, Rothersthorpe (SP 715564). Earthwork remains of an E-W running hollow way with adjoining building platforms suggest contraction or shifting of the medieval village. Population and tax
records do not indicate any period of poplation decline, and cartographic evidence suggests that parts of the area were occupied in the early C19th. A comparatively recent shifting of the village rather than decline or shrinkage is suggested. [RCHM plan]. 47 paid 1673 hearth tax. Parish population was 197 in 1801 and 293 by 1871.
{4} There were 54 houses in 1720.
{7} Maps show a movement of the village, not a decline.
{8} By the Domesday survey Rothersthorpe lay in Collingtree Hundred and was held by Geoffery Alselin. The manor was granted to Simon de Pateshull by King John in 1209, and remained with his successors until it passed to Thomas Reeve Thornton of Brockhall in 1773. The principal surviving evidence for medieval settlement comprises the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, founded in the C13th. Early medieval pottery has also been recorded within the village, whilst other archaeological remains suggest that the modern village has been subject to a degree of shrinkage or shifting from its medieval predecessor.
{9} Rothersthorpe village. A survey was carried out of Medieval settlement using documentary evidence on order to recreate the furlong map and agricultural history. The settlement is first mentioned in Doomsday although the Saxon site shows it had earlier origins (before c.800 AD).
