Full Description

{2} The site is largely shrunken and the settlement in the Tudor period and later largely shifted to the main road. The market place is likely to have been in the eastern part of the settlement near manor and church. There were significant earthworks surviving until the 1970s but now most are levelled. If significant remains have survived cultivation it may be possible for investigation of the issue of commercial activity to be examined on the back of the key issues in this settlement which are the investigation of the great house and park of Henry VIII, the Civil War siege and possibly the late Saxon origins of the settlement outlined by Brown. Such an investigation may be valuable as Grafton is one of the very few late medieval market foundations in the county and it is a settlement and the one which is currently the least developed. However the archaeological evidence of relevance, especially in the absence of good documentary evidence, may be too ephemeral to be worth investigation.

{3} The Midlands Archaeological Research Society is continuing a metal detector survey of the fields around the village of Grafton Regis. The aim is to detect and plot metal objects which may be associated with the Civil War siege of 1643.

{9} Possibly not taken forward to Stage 2 survey and assessment.

{10} Family tree of Wydeville.

{12} Settlement remains and manor house site (SP 756467) at Grafton Regis. The extant street pattern, and earthwork remains suggesting house and paddock sites, along with a larger rectangular enclosure with internal embanked area suggest an extension to the original village plan that has now been abandoned.
