Full Description
{1} The Rectory of Thrapston was granted to the Abbey of Bourne at its foundation, but the abbot only ever drew a pension from the Rectory, never instituting a vicarage. This arrangement was in place in 1254 and persisted until the dissolution. The Rectory was thus held directly by the priest responsible for Thrapston church. In 1849 the Rectory House was described as 'a good commodious residence' standing in the principal street.
{3} The medieval town of Thrapston was urban by 1205 when a market is recorded.
{5} Thrapston is a small market town. The town was almost entirely rebuilt in the 19th century. The bridge over the Nene is a major feature of the town and is first mentioned in 1224. The manor of Thrapston was granted by Baldwin Wake to Robert de Vere and followed the descent of Great Addington, where the Veres lived until the 18th century, when Thrapston was sold. In 1335 during Ralf de Vere's tenancy an extent of the manor of Thrapston shows there was a market and a fair. The market probably dates from 1205 and the fair from 1226.
